Applications from individual homeowners are not accepted by the SEAI. However, service providers can submit an application on your behalf. So how does this work? The below steps will guide you through the process:
Step 1 – Expression of Interest
Contact an SEAI approved service provider and express your interest in a retrofit grant. Alternatively contact Home Energy Grants team HERE
Step 2 – Home Survey
An initial energy performance assessment will need to be carried out on your home which is known as a Technical Assessment. This survey can be complex depending on the style of house and it normally consists of:
- An inspection of internal & external areas of your home (that includes your attic; so make sure it is accessible if possible!).
- Assessment of the current heating system.
- Assessment of the current ventilation system.
- Assessment of the current windows and doors.
- Aspects of your home will be measured, photographed and recorded.
- Making initial recommendations for your home to achieve the requirements of an upgrade.
- A general discussion to ensure you know what’s involved.
Step 3 – Design and Costing
From there, the service provider will work with various independent SEAI approved BER assessors to compile an appropriate package of measures and costs. This package will then be discussed with you and the final project specifications & costs will be agreed.
This will then form the overall grant application and it will then be ready to submit.
Step 4 – Application Approval
SEAI will then assess the funding application. Depending on the time of the year, approval may be within 1 week or several weeks . Once the application has been approved, a letter of offer will be issued for your perusal. If you accept the offer, then the project reaches construction phase.
Applying for a retrofit grant is a lot simpler than many would expect. Simply contact an independent SEAI approved surveyor at Home Energy Grants and they will take care of the rest!
